Atop the island of Janitzio is a statue of Jose Maria Morelos, one of the leaders of the Mexican war of independence from Spain. The statue is approximately 120 feet tall, with a spiral staircase leading to the top, which is a torch held by Morelos, similar to our more famous Statue of Liberty.
During Day of the Dead activities, there was a steady line of tourists inching their way up the statue. After 20 minutes in line and only progressing up one story, my friends and I gave up!
Here is a young woman resting inside the entrance to statue, in front of one of the beautiful murals which depict Morelos and events during the time of the war of independence.
