A friend of mine, Andrew Szikla, is now showing abstract photographs of koi at the gallery within the Calumet Photographic camera store in Escondido.

This show is the finest I have seen in a great while. From the arrangement of the artwork, to the exquisite floating prints so beautifully framed, even down to how he signed his prints, Andrew thought of, and nailed to perfection, every detail. And the photos, well, it was hard for me to choose a favorite (I did, though) since I admired and liked them all!

I was fortunate to see many of Andrew's working prints early in this project, and I am thrilled to see how he has brought them together into a gallery show as special as this one. 

These prints look great in the Calumet gallery, they would look even better on your living room wall!

Calumet Photographic is freeway close at 830 West Valley Parkway in Escondido, and is one of the few full service camera stores left in San Diego, staffed by knowledgable and helpful photographers.

Bird Photography Talk

I will be speaking this weekend at the annual Laguna Mountain Lodge Weekend photo retreat, put on by the San Diego Sierra Club's Photo Section. I will be giving my talk: Bird Photography in Southern California and Beyond.

I will also help lead a macro photography workshop, demonstrating the use of Lensbaby lenses in creative macro photography. (thanks to a generous loan of macro kits from the Lensbaby company!)

Also instructing at this retreat are fellow bird photographer Steve Cirone, photo blogger Ken Rockwell, and fine art photographers Peter Nagainis and Bob Younger.

Tennis Benefit

One of my tennis photos was used as a promotional poster for a benefit tournament this weekend. The Semiahmoo Tennis Association, in Washington State, has a member with leukemia. This tournament was organized to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Washington. I hope it was a success!

Friends of Lake Murray

San Diego Audubon Society

Ten of my bird photographs are now hanging at the San Diego Aububon Society gallery. The Audubon Society is located at 4010 Morena Blvd. Suite 100, San Diego, 92117. Hours are M-F 10-3. The photos will hang through September 28.

Nine of these photos are from my Mission Trails Park show two years ago, and one was shown at the San Diego Natural History Museum Best of Nature show last year. So if you missed those shows, now is your chance! 

If you're on your way to the Morena Blvd. Costco, stop on by the Audubon Society. The staff is friendly and there's an impressive library of birding books and other resources. All photos (including the burrowing owl shown below) are for sale, with a portion of the sale going to the San Diego Audubon Society.

Rock-A-Billy Road

My second CD cover has just come out. The Road Crew, a rockabilly band out of Nashville, has used one of my Route 66 photos on the back cover of their latest CD, Rock-A-Billy Road.

The cd contains 15 tracks of traditional rockabilly-style tunes, by Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and others. It would make an ideal cd for a 50s party or to provide the soundtrack for your next road trip!

Clean Slate: Cool App

I try to keep my computer's desktop relatively uncluttered. But as someone who frequently gives slide-show presentations, I don't really want to show my desktop to my audience. What's the solution?

St. Clair Gallery Smart-Space

Tomorrow (Tuesday May 3) evening marks the first reception for the St. Clair Gallery/Smart Space. This is the second gallery space curated by Howard Bagley.

I have two large bird photographs hanging. There are approximately 70 works of art by 18 artists in the current show, with a wide variety of abstract and representational art and photography. The reception is from 6-8 p.m. and the show will hang until May 20. I hope to see you there!

The gallery is located at 4455 Murphy Canyon Rd., San Diego. 

San Jose Museum of Art

Welcome diglloyd readers!

Yesterday my friend Lloyd Chambers posted an article I wrote about a recent visit to the San Jose Museum of Art. 

If you are in San Jose during the next six months, you must visit the Museum of Art and view their photography exhibit, The Modern Photographer, Observation and Intention.

It's an incredible selection from their permanent collection of works mostly from the first half of the 20th century, showcasing works of Steichen, Ruth Bernhard, Weegee, André Kertesz, and many others. It shows through July 3, 2011.
