The Art of Bird Photography

Please join me for the opening reception of The Art of Bird Photography, my upcoming solo show at the Mission Trails Park Visitor Center Gallery.

This show features 49 all-new bird photographs from California, Arizona, and Mexico. This is my third solo show in six years, and if I may say so, it will be the best!

The opening reception will be held this Sunday, April 26, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. There is no charge and refreshments will be served. If you cannot make the reception, you may visit the visitor center free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The show will hang April 26 through Friday, May 22.

All works are for sale and a portion of sales will benefit the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.

The visitor center is located at 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego, CA 92119. Detailed directions to the center are available here.

There is excellent hiking in the area, so make a day of it! I hope to see you there!

Birds of the World

Thanks to everyone who showed up to the San Diego Natural History Museum yesterday, for the opening of Birds of the World, a terrific show featuring the work of 14 photographers and birds from every continent. If you missed it, the show will remain at the museum until  September 13.

There was not enough space for every photograph to be displayed, so here is one more of my photos, a Yellow-footed Gull, photographed in San Felipe, Baja California. The gull swallowed the sting-ray whole!

The Yellow-footed Gull is found almost exclusively in the Sea of Cortez, though it is occasionally seen at the Salton Sea.

Birds of the World: San Diego Natural History Museum

If you are a nature lover, bird lover, or simply a lover of superb photography, Birds of the World is one show you should not miss! Fourteen wildlife photographers from around the world will present photos of birds from every continent. I am proud to have six of my photos on display in this exhibition, including the Military Macaw leaving its nest (below), photographed last year near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The show is located in the Ordover Gallery on Level 4 of the San Diego Natural History Museum. There is no charge if you visit this Saturday morning during the opening reception. The reception will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Please visit the museum website for more information on the show. There will also be a talk by renowned bird photographer Art Morris at 9 a.m.

Sierra Photo Club

I will be speaking this Thursday night at the Sierra Photo Club, giving my talk: Bird Photography in Southern California and Beyond.

The club meets at the meeting room at Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring St., San Diego, CA 92109, at 7 p.m.

If you have seen this talk before, I have updated it with many new locations and photos, including many in Baja California.

Mission Trails Park Show

A big thanks to everyone who stopped by during the show or during the reception at Mission Trails Park. And a bigger thanks to all of those who purchased one or more photos!

Doing the entire show on canvas was a huge plus. Much less work was involved (no matting and framing) and as a number of people commented, there was nothing that came between the viewer and the print.

The next chance to see some of my bird photography will be at an upcoming show at the San Diego Audubon Society headquarters. Stay tuned!

Mission Trails Park Show

My show, Birds of the Californias: Photos from Southern California and Baja California, is now hanging at the Mission Trails Regional Park Art Gallery. It looks great! Please visit anytime between now and November 30. There will be a reception with refreshments on Sunday, November 18, from 1-4 p.m.

The show features 48 bird photographs taken during the last three years throughout Southern California and Baja. All photos are printed on canvas. All works are for sale with a portion of the sale to benefit the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.

North County Photographic Society

I'll be speaking tonight at the North County Photographic Society! I'll be giving my slide show: Bird Photography in Southern California and Beyond. The NCPS meets at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information and directions, see their website. I hope to see you there!

A friend of mine, Andrew Szikla, is now showing abstract photographs of koi at the gallery within the Calumet Photographic camera store in Escondido.

This show is the finest I have seen in a great while. From the arrangement of the artwork, to the exquisite floating prints so beautifully framed, even down to how he signed his prints, Andrew thought of, and nailed to perfection, every detail. And the photos, well, it was hard for me to choose a favorite (I did, though) since I admired and liked them all!

I was fortunate to see many of Andrew's working prints early in this project, and I am thrilled to see how he has brought them together into a gallery show as special as this one. 

These prints look great in the Calumet gallery, they would look even better on your living room wall!

Calumet Photographic is freeway close at 830 West Valley Parkway in Escondido, and is one of the few full service camera stores left in San Diego, staffed by knowledgable and helpful photographers.

Anna's Hummingbird

I will be speaking to Friends of Lake Murray tomorrow, September 15, at 5pm. I will present my slide show Bird Photography in Southern California and Beyond.

This slide show is open to the public and is free of charge. The group meets at the St. Dunstan's Church Meeting Hall, at 6556 Park Ridge Blvd., San Diego. I hope to see you there!

Bird Photography Talk

I will be speaking this weekend at the annual Laguna Mountain Lodge Weekend photo retreat, put on by the San Diego Sierra Club's Photo Section. I will be giving my talk: Bird Photography in Southern California and Beyond.

I will also help lead a macro photography workshop, demonstrating the use of Lensbaby lenses in creative macro photography. (thanks to a generous loan of macro kits from the Lensbaby company!)

Also instructing at this retreat are fellow bird photographer Steve Cirone, photo blogger Ken Rockwell, and fine art photographers Peter Nagainis and Bob Younger.
