Colombia Birding: Araucana Lodge: Andean Emerald, Brown Violetear

The Andean Emerald is found in the Andes from Colombia to Peru.

Here is one at the Araucana Lodge, near Cali:

Colombia Birding: Araucana Lodge: Red-crowned Woodpecker, Montane Woodcreeper

The Red-crowned Woodpecker looks a lot like the Gila Woodpecker and the Golden-fronted Woodpecker.

It is found in parts of Central and northern South America.

Here is one at the Araucana Lodge:

There are over 50 species of woodcreeper. All are like larger versions of our Brown Creeper, crawling up trees looking for small insects. All are found in Mexico, Central or South America.

The Montane Woodcreeper is found in the Andes of various South American countries.

Here is one at the Araucana Lodge. Look closely and you'll see a tiny insect about to be a meal.

Colombia Birding: Araucana Lodge: Orange-bellied Euphonia, Black-winged Saltator

There are about thirty species of bird with the name Euphonia. Most are colorful finches that live in South America, though some are in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Here is a male Orange-bellied Euphonia:

Similarly, there are 17 species of saltator, all large-billed birds found in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central of South America.

Here is a Black-winged Saltator, found only on the western slope of the Andes in Colombia or Ecuador:

The Steely-vented Hummingbird is found only in Colombia and Venezuela.

The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird ranges from southern Mexico to northwestern South America.

The immature male Green Honeycreeper is a confusion of green and blue:

Colombia Birding: Araucana Lodge: Lineated Woodpecker

The Lineated Woodpecker has a large range extending through much of Mexico, Central and South America.

Though I had seen Lineated Woodpeckers before in Mexico, it was a thrill to see this large woodpecker at the Araucana Lodge.
