A Marbled Godwit strolls in front of a Snowy Egret at the San Diego River Mouth on a late afternoon in July of this year:
A few minutes later a juvenile Snowy Egret flies in, and the adult decides that the juvenile is not wanted:
A few minutes later the juvenile wanders back, and the adult now tolerates it:
Two minutes later the youngster looks for greener pastures, so to speak:
When I saw the egret with darker legs, I first thought I might be looking at a juvenile Little Blue Heron (which would be white as a juvenile). Upon review, though, I realized the bird was a juvenile Snowy Egret, which has greenish legs and can have black on the forelegs, like this one.
