The Tyrian Metaltail is a small hummingbird found in the Andes. This one was photographed at a hummingbird observatory near Bogotá.
Did you know: the name of the bird comes from the dye Tyrian Purple, which is named after the city of Tyre, Lebanon. In ancient times the Phoenicians developed the dye from snails.
When the bird flies (below) it sometimes displays its metallic, purple tail.
