I met Alexander Kunz a number of years ago, as he is the president of San Diego's Sierra Club Photo Section, a club of photography enthusiasts.
While many people consider themselves nature photographers, few are artists. Alex is a photographic artist.
His photos are not found by randomly pointing his camera at scenes he comes across. Rather, he sees what most people pass by, unseeing.
His photos show a deep sensitivity to nature, cultivated by study and continuously practicing the art, as well as thorough knowledge of San Diego County's backcountry and hidden spots, found by exploration.
But it takes more than sensitivity, study, and exploration, it takes his thorough understanding of photographic technique, lighting, composition, and processing to convey what he sees to others.
When I saw this picture of his, I was taken aback by its pure poetry. I have hiked Peñasquitos Canyon, and have probably passed this scene. But Alex's eye and technique have transformed it into a work of art that others can enjoy.
Take the time to visit Alex's website, blog or webstore which features photos you'll want to hang on your wall. (be prepared to stay there a while!) Or order his new 2022 calendar, San Diego Landscapes Through The Seasons, like I just did!
