I spent the week surrounding Day of the Dead this year in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán.
Michoacan and Oaxaca are known as two places in Mexico where the local population traditionally is heavily engaged in activities around Dia de los Muertos. As I visited Oaxaca previously, this year I decided to visit Michoacan.
The epicenter of activity is the island of Janitzio, which is located in Lake Pátzcuaro, near the town of Pátzcuaro. In Janitzio, and other towns in the area, villagers spend the entire night of November 1 in the cemetery, honoring their passed family members. While there is not the quite the party atmosphere that exists in, say, San Miguel de Allende (where I spent last year's Day of the Dead), nevertheless there are plenty of people in Pátzcuaro's town squares that celebrate Day of the Dead by dressing as calaveras (skeletons).
Here's one.
Beautiful shot !
