I learned today that Doña Anita Espinoza, of El Rosario, Baja California, passed away last weekend. She was 109 years old.
Over 50 years ago she was instrumental in the founding of the Flying Samaritans, a charity in which volunteers donate their time to provide medical care in underserved communities throughout Baja California.
Doña Espinoza and her family have run a restaurant, "Mama Espinoza's," in El Rosario for many years.
Five years ago, at her home behind her restaurant, I was privileged to meet her and listen to a few stories from her childhood, when her family fled the Mexican Revolution. Here is one picture from that memorable visit. (I posted the picture on this blog five years ago).
