The Olive-sided Flycatcher has always been a challenging bird for me to photograph, as I do not spend a lot of time in the forests where they are typically found. Furthermore, they typically spend their time at the tops of tall trees, from which they hunt for insects.
To photograph this bird, I clambered up a hillside so I could be approximately level with its perch. I was still a good distance away, so it is not as sharp as I would prefer.
I photographed this bird near June Lake, California, in June of this year.
The Olive-sided Flycatcher sings a very distinctive song, well known among birders, a loud three-syllable phrase which sounds most like "Quick three beers!"
Did you also know? Most Olive-sided Flycatchers spend our winter in South America!
