Reading about Day of the Dead in Tijuana, I learned of a historical soldier who has achieved legendary status. Juan Castillo Morales was stationed in Tijuana in the 1930s, and was convicted of the rape and murder of an eight year old girl. He was executed by firing squad.
Many, however, believed him innocent, and soon many came to believe that his spirit, in a saint-like fashion, was able to intercede in their affairs if they prayed to him or left him offerings. He is especially called upon to help undocumented migrants cross the border!
You can read more about him here.
He has not just one, but two shrines erected for him in the Puerta Blanca Cemetery in Tijuana, where people pray to him, and leave him candles, flowers, and the like. On the Day of the Dead, his shrines are quite busy. He is referred to most often as Juan Soldado (Soldier John).
Juan is surrounded by flowers and plaques attesting to his miracles.
A second shrine:
His only statue not surrounded by flowers or candles!
The cemetery is one of two found on the street Venustiana Carranza, just west of downtown Tijuana.
