This Military Macaw was leaving its nest within the cavity of this tree. The nest was about 50 yards away, across a deep ravine, located about 20 miles southeast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Unfortunately, there is an active network of poachers in Mexico who will even resort to cutting down a tree like this one to capture the birds. It is estimated that upwards of 75% of the captured parrots and macaws die before ever being sold to a consumer. For this reason, the capture of wild parrots was banned in Mexico in 2008.
