A male Ring-necked Duck, photographed at Santee Lakes in December of last year. The unusual lighting consisted of late afternoon sun illuminating the duck. The water behind the duck reflects the support structure of a light colored bridge, also illuminated by the afternoon sun.
This is a case where I found an interesting background, as well as interesting lighting, and waited for something interesting to happen in the foreground. Luckily there are lots of ducks at Santee Lakes, and luckily this one flapped its wings for me. (It helps to know the behavior of ducks, which will usually flap their wings after bathing.)
