I believe these are Eared Grebes, at the Salton Sea well after sunset, about two weeks ago.

Wrentit
The Wrentit is a bird more often heard than seen. Its call resembles a bouncing ball, starting off slowly and accelerating over a few seconds. It prefers to forage in bushes, rarely showing itself for long. Here one comes into view in the late afternoon at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Claremont, California.
