I took my camera this evening to La Jolla Cove, hoping for a nice sunset and hoping for some pelicans to fly in front of the sun.
While there, I spent a moment watching a photographer shooting what appeared to be an engagement portrait of a young couple. This is a common occurrence at this beautiful location.
The photographer instructed the couple to stroll along the sand by the water, and I watched him take some pleasant photos of the couple looking loving, but rather like a thousand other couples posed in the same manner.
Suddenly a small wave washed ashore (about six inches high), which made the couple jump and shriek with unfeigned delight. What did the photographer do? He was avoiding the small wave himself, and missed what could have been a memorable shot.
Now I have missed countless shots myself, of course, as has every photographer. But we must keep all of our senses alert, and be ready for what Cartier-Bresson termed the decisive moment. (and maybe wear waterproof shoes!)
What happened when I was watching this scene unfold?
A group of pelicans flew in front of the setting sun. I missed the shot...
