Back to Route 66

Today I sold a 24x36 inch canvas print of this photograph, taken near Chambless, California, on Route 66, to a collector in San Diego.

Last week, a gentleman asked permission to use this image to open a slide show being shown at the 2011 Route 66 convention in Amarillo, Texas.

Not a Bird Picture

I just spent a few days in the vicinity of California's Highway 395, looking at various birding spots. The last spot was a short hiking trail in Big Bear. This short trail is reputed to be the best mountain birding spot in southern California!

I saw, I think, three birds, one close enough for an average photo. But the trail was simply lovely, along a stream down to a meadow. The stream was surrounded by red and yellow flowers. Indian paintbrush and lupine I recognized. So I decided to take a few pictures of the flowers instead of birds, though it was a little ungainly pointing my enormous bird lens at the delicate flowers.

Perhaps one of my naturalist friends can identify this cute little daisy for me:
 

Mallard

 How to get a shot like this? If you see a duck bathing and submerging its head, then very soon it will flap its wings to dry off. Just be ready!

Juvenile Spotted Sandpiper

I believe that this is a juvenile spotted sandpiper. Taken earlier this week, minutes before sunset, at Lindo Lake, Lakeside, California.

Wrentit

I'm back from a hiatus (from a horrendous cold!). 

The wrentit's distinctive, bouncing-ball like call can be heard nearly daily in the chaparral behind my house, but the bird almost never shows itself. Here it briefly perches in an orange tree in my back yard.
