Western Sandpipers, in breeding plumage, photographed along Poe Road at the Salton Sea in April 2013. While this species breeds in far northern and western Alaska, it can be seen in breeding plumage before, during, or after migration.
The birds had their wings outstretched to balance against a very strong and gusting wind.
Water levels in the Salton Sea are now much lower than when I took this photograph. I was very close to Poe Road when I took this photo, now the shoreline would be rather distant.
