Looking more like a lion than a bird, a Reddish Egret hunts for breakfast at Estero Beach.
Reddish Egrets are extremely uncommon in California (though they can be seen at Bolsa Chica). Head south of the border, though, and they are quite common. There were three or four active at Estero Beach last weekend, where I took this photograph. Reddish Egrets are distinctive in that they are very active, and appear to be dancing, when they hunt for fish, unlike many other herons and egrets which tend to stand still.
Look carefully and you can see a band on each leg.
